My love of dancing started around the age of fourteen where the metal work teacher at school, Chris Wellock, passed his dance teachers qualification.
He opened a dance school in Urmston where I continued to learn to dance and took my medals in Latin and Ballroom. The school ran a competition at Fielden Park, Didsbury, Manchester. I was helping on the door when I was dragged on to the dance floor to dance in the beginners Cha and Rumba. We came third. The bug had bitten. I was hooked on competitive dancing.
I had a number of partners where we progressed from beginners to intermediate and Pre Amateur. I was attending Bob Dale’s place in Albert Square Manchester and learnt a lot by talking and watching other couples for example Sammy Stopford and Marcus Hilton with their respective partners at the time.
In 1979, I was preparing to emigrate to Canada, Visa ready and waiting to sell my house. A friend of mine phoned me almost every day to go to Twiggy’s dance school to try out with this girl – Deborah.
We partnered up and danced for a while before getting married in 1980.
We gave up on the competitions whilst we became parents and brought up our three children.
In the mid 90’s we were supporting our children in learning to dance and watching a Supadance Team Match at Cadman’s. We were asked to help out and dance on their team to make up the numbers. We won.
Soon we were part of the senior first team and went on to win the National Supadance Team Match for 5 years. During that time we also won the IDTA Nationwide Medallist of the Year at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool.
We moved on to Open competitions in 2000 where we won the Intermediate Champions of Tomorrow and started a series of wins in Senior Pre champ and Senior Competitions. We supported the EADA Charts and are pleased to say we were the leading couple in Senior 2 for over 2 years which led us to be nominated to dance for England on various occasions. Please see the shortened version of our dancing victories.
I started dancing when I was 14 years old. I attended Leviston School of Dancing where I was taught by Gwen Horton. Most of my spare time in my teenage years was spent dancing where I completed all of my medals within 4 years. As I became older, my ambitions turned towards “open” competitions. I placed an advert in Dance News where I met Gordon in 1979 and married in 1980.
We danced for a couple of years in “open competitions” and then went on to have our family.
We have three wonderful children, all of whom joined in with our love of dance. In 1994, after our middle son took medals we were asked to represent Cadman’s Dance School on their various Supadance Teams, it was extra special that our whole family took part. During our time with Cadman’s we represented England in a team match in Germany. Our Senior Team won the League finals for four years/
In 1999 we decided to move on with our dancing career and started competing in “open” competitions. Our first achievement was to enter and win the Champions of Tomorrow Intermediate title in 2000. We moved on to Senior Pre Championships level where we won numerous competitions. As we progressed, we became more successful at Senior level and eventually at International level where we have represented England at Senior level in Ten Dance (Ballroom and Latin) Senior 2 Level in Ballroom and Latin American dancing.
